I am a newcomer/inexperienced Run8 user. Back in early May I Joined SRS and started trying to learn real-world ops with some greatly appreciated help from Clint. I've been offline for a few months (work busy and learning a couple of other rail simulators). Anyway, back in in May one of the problems that came up was the hump configuration at Barstow being messed up. I have a sneaking suspicion I was the cause, though I'm unsure what I might have done to cause it. I had done a tutorial by Oleander which involved the Newberry Ballast Pit and Rheox. These industries were not present in my Run8 so I assumed I needed to MAKE them, which I did. A good learning experience. Later (and I can't remember how) I discovered that these are part of The Depot+ Config Files. So I downloaded them, including the Hump config and followed the (complicated) importing processes. I don't know if my having these configs somehow later polluted the SRS configs. Maybe (??) I did something that caused the SRS hump config to be loaded with the Depot one I had. Again I am a newcomer. I can't say when but I plan to come back and try to participate here again. I appreciate the offer of the training sessions by Clint, and plan to take advantage. First I have to refresh my basic operating knowledge. Anyway, in anticipation:

How can I make sure I don't pollute the configs for SRS?
How can I get the configs locally so I can practice offline?
I already figured out I can "capture" the state of the server by doing a World save, disconnect, then load the World. Is this safe? Do I get the SRS configs somehow that way?
Is there a way to save the SRS configs? Should I even DO this?
How can I avoid config conflicts between SRS and other servers I might end up using?
Run8 R5 has a giant note to save SoCal industry configs. Why?
Run8 R5 says you must install San Bernardino before R5. This makes me thing R5 includes a SBD update. How dies this jive with SRS?

Maybe some of the above are not problems at all. I just want to understand what's going on so as to avoid screwing things up for others (at least with respect to shared configs!).

First you can't modify change or delete the config from the SRS server. It is hosted bythe server and sent to each client every time you connect. It does not change your local config for single player, it merely overrides it for the time that you are connected to the server. The only way for you to actually get a copy is to ask Mike if he is willing to share it with you.

Related to the config issues, there was a problem with the server not properly displaying the config to clients that was fixed with update 5. Speaking of update 5, the reason you need to have SBD installed first is due to how installation and updating work. If you update then install, the install would over write the newer updated files, therefore losing the effect of the update.

Speaking to the hump config issues, there is only one way to change the config on the server, and that is to actually push the button that says Push to Host. Now this button is right beside the pull from host button which you need to be using every time you hump. I wish Run8 had at least built in a pop up dialog asking if you are sure you want to push to host, because it's easy to misclick similar buttons that are side by side. You can save the hump config to disk if you plan to practice humping offline with a world save or saved train from the server.

A not about world saves on the server: The client (your computer) only loads a small portion of the world from the server immediately around your current position. That's why every time you go to a new area the trains sometimes take a second to show up. This means world save while on the server only saves that small portion that is loaded and the rest of the world will be empty. Just keep this in mind if you are expecting to see the whole world, you won't.

Lastly the only reason you would need or want the SRS config is if you plan to practice running locals in single player and need to see specifically where the industry tracks are. Other than that there's no real benefit to it. The config tells Run8 what cars to spawn, and how to process them at the industry. Showing the location of the industry tracks is the only benefit to you for single player practice.
