Would someone be kind enough to explain the process of figuring hpt minimums of adding power to a train? I see the building of trains guidelines in the SRS registry. Is there a formula used.

You can find an engine calculator on run8depot.com under resources. Just enter the train weight and desired hpt and it will tell you how many engines of each type it requires. If you scroll down on that same page there you can see what the hpt will be for a given weight based on the number of engines of each type that you want to add. For road trains you only really need to worry about the top calculator as they will mostly be ES44 and SD70 power. If it tells you you need 2.1 engines always round up to make sure you have at least the minimum hpt required.

You can also just use a calculator and take the total tonnage of the train multiplied by the desired HPT. This will give you the total horsepower required to make that HPT. Just select enough locomotives of whatever type to get to that horsepower, and then divide them up into distributed power sets as necessary.
For example: 9577 tons 2.5 HPT required
9577 x 2.5=23942.5 or 23943 total horsepower required
This method works well if you need to create a consist that has many different locomotive types.

That method would require you to know what the horsepower is for each unit. I think this can also be found on the run8depot site.

There is a train in Barstow taking up two tracks R7 & R8. total tons 23240 and 11895 ft length . Using the run8 depot calculator ,this train needs 10 ES44's to acquire 1.8 hpt Mins. Would you set it up as 4 x 3 x 3 ?

This train has been put back into a holding status for a decision on what to do with it. It exceeds the total weight limit for Cajon sub.
