I got as far as connecting to the server, going over to Barstow, noticing all of the units and cars and trains. I went there by transporting to another guy's server session. I got there as he was moving two power units to couple to a really long train and then back it into somewhere else. Don't laugh... he said Hi and I didn't know how to talk back!! I found TAB and that was good.
Now my questions:
1. Where did he get those switchers? How did he know where to go and which ones to use? 2. How did he know where he was in the yard? I looked in the F3 dispatch screen at Barstow Yard and he did not show at all. I assume this is because he was operating in a "local" part of the yard. So where to you find maps of THAT? How do you know where you are?
3. How did he even know what to do? Is the "registry" the key to this?
4. Reading threads in BNSF Barstow Yard ... How do people know what is going on there? And where are all of the location names that seem well known?
When I read some of the posts here it's like any lingo... I don't know what the heck is going on yet. I apologize if I am asking questions with yuge answers that I should just research myself.
I'm planning to observe and listen on Discord on the session tomorrow night. I sure hope I can tell where things are and how to get from place to place as an observer. I have done some local switching per a nice training video and it worked out well. I didn't have the Depot industry files so I had to make up Rheox and Newberry Ballast Pit myself and then create all of the trains with tags etc. It was a great learning experience. I got it all done.

1) Switchers are usually provided in areas they are needed. The work list in the registry will show what's available and what engine symbol to use. You just need to have the tags visible on the engine. 2) Maps are available at run8depot.com and you learn where you are at by teleporting to a location and following the line from there. SHIFT F8 and CTRL F8 will toggle through various tags such as on the train and on the tracks to help guide you in some places. 3) Yep as in #1 4) See all above I don't know how many people use Discord, I know I don't personally. Some like myself simply like to text, but I do live streams on YouTube. Here was the latest from yesterday's session but I normally don't get on until about an hour in - www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWI4AFVMaP8Thanks Sean

I used the F8 tags yesterday while switching at Newberry and Rheox. But how do you "teleport to a location"? I found the server guy by transporting to his train from the F2 list. But where is the map or list I can use to just teleport to a named location (other than an industry!)? For example, how would I teleport to the UP Yermo Yard? I'm there now but I got there by transporting to "Ski"s location from the F2 screen, and the only way I know I am there is I recognize the big "Y". But what if I just want to go there? This may be sooo stupid, but I simply don't know. I have the Depot's excellent maps, and man it would be good to be able to click on that and teleport.
I'm looking at the Depot map for the Barstow yard now and flying around. No Depot map for UP Yermo though... what the heck?

In the DS screen space bar or middle mouse button over the N or R (switches).
You also need to learn to move your avatar with the WASD keys in combination with shift and ctrl. I do this all the time in my videos.
Loading up an extra board first will get you to many locations as well. Yermo is on the run8depot maps (I forget which one if it's BAR or Needles as I don't use Yermo for much of anything).
I would read up a bit more on the guides and PDF in Run8 as well. The docs are not perfect but might answer some of your questions.
Thanks

Yeah! And I'll bet it's in the DS manual. I read through it but at the time I was even more uninformed and confused than I am now. I spent an afternoon chasing AI trains in the external DS app which is a real work of art.
Thanks. I am really good at moving my avatar this way, but I was unaware of seeing others' avatars. Also I had to get the (apparently) secret F11+Left Click to get into the cab of a passing train (even AI) from another user. I also didn't understand the "jump aboard" F-11 function. Once aboard from an F-11 jump, I know there is another secret click/key that can get you up on the front platform and I have done it a few times but I can't do it when I want ha ha. If this is in the PDFs I'll feel stupid, but I really did look for it. [edit] I found the Avatar stuff in V2 Important Changes. I didn't read that one because I thought it just applied to people who were using V1 and needed to know that things changed.
I've been through the PDFs, but are the guides different? Anyway, without context of experience some of the things (obviously) didn't jump out and stick. I get your point and will re-read now that I have constructed a scenario, placed trains, then switched them as locals around at Rheox and Newberry, assembled a train to 1.8 HP/T train and took it from there through Barstow on the mainline and out past the Victorville Cement plant. I added two more units up front and two DPU on the rear, got them running and started up Cajon before running out of time. No broken couplers and no broken speed limits.

Is there a quick guide to Registry use somewhere? I am really nervous about doing a yard operation and then screwing up the data handling in the registry. For example, how to I mark an item in the work list as "assigned" or whatever so someone else won't try to do it? Or do people just go look at the yard, try to take possession of the train or power, then realize that someone else is just starting the unit(s) or ?

Bob, Check out the SRS video tutorial series as I created a video on how to update the work list and another video on making yard entry updates.

Ski -- Well done!! Nice videos, easy to listen to your voice, good pace, no speech static. I just watched both of your Registry videos over lunch, just what I needed. I get it now, thanks!! I'm going to look over the territory and maybe try doing my first yard op.

Hi Sean, I missed you live as I was working with Clint in Bakersfield. He was helping me do my second local which required dispatcher as it used the mainline. I'll have a look though.

That's cool, check out the video that Ski posted in the SRS series under dynamic breaking. I start off with some key commands and other ways of finding out where you are and what is available.
Thanks

I looked at your video and there is some good info there, thanks! It's easy to miss the stuff like the arrow keys, spacebar-click in the DS, and the "jump aboard" and "click aboard" F11. The fly around is indispensable. My biggest problem is not knowing where I am while on the train or in the cab, and not knowing my way around the tracks. I keep having to CTRL-E up and get the bird's eye view, compare with the Depot sub maps and the maps in the DS screen. Another thing that REALLY got me was how the in-sim comms work with the double-tap-TAB then realizing I have to do something like change the throttle or blow the whistle for a crossing and it doesn't work then I realize I had to tap TAB again to close the commo channel. I sure wish these guys would go voice with Discord or TeamSpeak. "In-sim text chat not allowed" would be a dream for a lot of people IMO.
Thanks for the input and good job on the video.

Discord is available for anyone that wishes to use it. I highly doubt though that telling people they must use Discord would ever happen let alone be a good idea for membership. I know a few people who have no interest in using Discord and are content with the text chat and its not fair to try to force them to use Discord.
I would use Discord but every time I go onto it there is no one there so I normally don't bother. If you are working with someone closely like you were with me last night, don't be afraid to ask them if they want to use Discord instead of typing. It is much easier for two people working together to use voice rather than text everything.
The Discord server also has dispatch channels if anyone prefers to use that, assuming the DS is willing to use it as well. Personally I would use it when I am dispatching, but like I said every time I pop in to check there isn't any one on it.

I guess you're right... I have the SRS Discord server set up but as you say no one is ever home. If it weren't required, then you'd have an impossible situation where a dispatcher would have to work both, and people on the same channel wouldn't know what was being said. I just see the text chat as way inferior to voice, and so I don't see it as "forcing" people, but "encouraging" them, ha ha. I can't imagine air traffic control running on text chat. I'm a newcomer here so I'll leave it at that!!
And thanks for the help and patience.

Funny you mention air traffic control. I am also an air traffic controller on the Vatsim network. There are more than a few pilots who are text only, and as much of a pain as it is for us as controllers, we deal with it. Its about giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy the hobbies they like even if they don't want to or don't have the capability (no mic) to use voice. We are all here to have fun so we work with what we have.

Hey Clint I used to be on VATSIM. Can you use the Steam version of FS on VATSIM? It's collecting dust on my hard drive right now Back on topic though, I wouldn't be here if I was forced to use something other than text Thanks Sean

You can Sean, that's what I used when I flew until I upgraded to X-Plane now that FSX is pretty much abandoned on all fronts. Look for a program called VPilot, that's what you will use to connect to the network.

I fly on X-Plane using PilotEdge, the Bell 412, 429, and 407 (the best of the X-Plane helos for realism). I used to fly the 407 for real. For IFR I fly the DC-3 ha ha. Attachments:

Sean and Ski -- You guys left the YWC42R power at the top of the West Colton hump last night (I was watching). Maybe not a real problem, but for "beginner practice" I moved them to the loco storage area 503, tied them down and tagged them UNKNOWN. Should I have put them into the Service Area instead, with tag READY AT HH:MM four ours in the future? I did make a notation in the comments of the work list to avoid surprises in case you left them there on purpose. Or maybe they are "switchers" and should have gone somewhere else and tagged appropriately. If so let me know and also I apologize.
